Strategy's mNAV Premium Erodes, Leaving Saylor with Ticking Time Bomb
Bitcoin's price has stalled around $80,000 for much of this week, and Arthur Hayes believes that pause alone is enough to break Strategy Inc.'s decade-old bitcoin playbook.
The BitMEX co-founder argues that Michael Saylor, Strategy's CEO, is now boxed into three uncomfortable choices: issue new shares, sell more BTC, or trim dividends on STRK and STRC preferred shares. None of these options are free.
Hayes points out that the mNAV premium has eroded to near 0.74x as of August 27, erasing its old edge. Strategy holds 840,447 BTC but owes about $1.5 billion a year in STRK and STRC dividends.
Hayes warns that Saylor must either issue equity, sell more bitcoin, or trim dividends going forward. He notes that the company's original reason for existing - letting investors pay extra for equity-funded bitcoin exposure - stops making sense once bitcoin's price is grinding sideways instead of compounding higher.
