Stratiphy Reopens Tax-Free Crypto ETN Route for UK Investors
Stratiphy has reopened a tax-free route for UK investors to buy crypto exchange-traded notes (ETNs), addressing a regulatory gap that emerged earlier this year. The fintech platform is offering an Innovative Finance Individual Savings Account (IF ISA) structure paired with three ETNs issued by 21Shares, covering BTC, ETH, and a blended Bitcoin-gold product. This move comes after HM Revenue and Customs ruled that new purchases of crypto ETNs would no longer qualify for standard stocks-and-shares ISAs.
The path to tax-free crypto ETN investing had closed quietly after HMRC tightened its ISA eligibility rules at the start of the new tax year. Eligibility shifted exclusively to Innovative Finance ISAs, a wrapper more commonly associated with peer-to-peer lending and not offered alongside crypto ETNs on any platform. This left retail investors with no practical route in.
Stratiphy's offering addresses this structural gap, providing UK investors with a functional tax-free route into crypto ETN investing. The access issue followed a broader regulatory shift, with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) lifting its four-year ban on retail crypto ETN products in October 2025. However, the HMRC change months later constrained this opening and made IF ISA wrappers applicable.
