Stripe-Advent Consortium Abandons $53 Billion PayPal Bid
PayPal stock plummeted over 12% in premarket trading after Stripe and Advent International dropped their $53 billion takeover bid for the company. The consortium had offered to purchase PayPal at a valuation of $60.50 per share, but the board rejected it as inadequate.
The offer was less than 9x free cash flow, according to Thomas Hayes, portfolio manager at Great Hill Capital, who praised the board's decision, saying it preserved 'meaningful upside' for existing shareholders.
PayPal CEO Enrique Lores has been leading a turnaround effort since March, reorganizing the company into three units: checkout, Venmo, and payments and crypto. The goal is to simplify operations and sharpen focus.
