Stripe Offers $53 Billion to Acquire PayPal in Stablecoin Push
Stripe has made an offer to acquire PayPal for $53 billion, but the deal is still pending as PayPal's board holds out for a higher price. If successful, Stripe would become the leading player in stablecoin rails overnight.
Stripe's Tempo network, launched on March 18, allows for minimal transaction fees and can be paid in any stablecoin. The company has partnered with major financial institutions such as Visa and Mastercard to design this network. Additionally, Stripe is part of a consortium that will launch Open USD (OUSD), a stablecoin that shares reserve yields with its partners.
The acquisition would bring PayPal's 439 million active accounts and consumers into the mix, making Tempo the primary settlement rail for the largest non-crypto-native stablecoin distribution channel ever built. This could starve capital from cryptocurrencies that rely heavily on stablecoin transfer volume, such as Tron.
