Stripe's $53 Billion Bid for PayPal Could Upend Crypto Landscape
Stripe is attempting to acquire PayPal for $53 billion, but no agreement has been reached yet.
While PayPal's board opted to hold out for a higher price on July 20, the deal could still go through in the near future.
If successful, Stripe would become the largest player in stablecoin rails overnight, with Tempo, its payments-first blockchain, poised to become the primary settlement rail for the largest non-crypto-native stablecoin distribution channel ever built.
This would have significant consequences for cryptocurrencies that rely heavily on stablecoin transfer volume, such as XRP and Solana.
XRP's original pitch was as an efficient cross-border money transfer layer, but its adoption has been questioned due to increasing use of stablecoins.
With Stripe empowered by PayPal's resources, Tempo would target the same buyers with orders-of-magnitude greater consumer reach, making it hard for XRP to compete effectively in the stablecoin payments space.
