Stripe's $53 Billion PayPal Bid: What it Means for Crypto
Stripe made an offer to buy PayPal for $53 billion on July 15. The deal has not been accepted yet, but it could still go through in the near future.
If Stripe acquires PayPal, it will have a huge impact on the crypto market. The combination of these two companies would create a giant with over 4 million merchants and 439 million active accounts. This would make Tempo, Stripe's payments-first blockchain for stablecoins, a major player in the stablecoin landscape.
PayPal has its own stablecoin, PayPal USD, which has a $2.7 billion market cap and uses Solana as its default payment network. With Stripe's acquisition of PayPal, Tempo could become the primary settlement rail for the largest non-crypto-native stablecoin distribution channel ever built. This would likely starve capital from cryptocurrencies that depend heavily on stablecoin transfer volume.
XRP and Solana are likely to be mildly bearish if Stripe acquires PayPal. XRP's original pitch as an efficient cross-border money transfer layer is questionable, especially with the increasing adoption of stablecoins. A Stripe empowered by PayPal's resources would aim Tempo at the same buyers with much greater consumer reach, making it hard for XRP to compete effectively in the stablecoin payments space.
