Sugar Surges Past Bitcoin as Global Demand Exceeds Supply
The price of sugar has outperformed Bitcoin over the past few weeks, reaching its highest level since April 2025. In contrast, the value of Bitcoin has largely stagnated during this time period.
A combination of three supply shocks has driven up the price of sugar: Brazil's malmos have shifted their focus from producing sugar to ethanol due to high oil prices, leading to a significant drop in domestic production; India has reinstated imports after imposing an export ban earlier this year; and global demand is expected to exceed supply for the 2026/27 crop season.
The rapid price increase of sugar has led some analysts to predict a negative global balance sheet for the upcoming crop season, with a deficit of 3.2 million tons anticipated.
