Sui and Cardano Clash for Bitcoin-Backed DeFi Supremacy
Sui and Cardano are vying for dominance in bringing Bitcoin liquidity to decentralized finance (DeFi). Sui has attracted over 25 institutional partners, including BitGo and Ledger, with its 'Hashi' testnet. This system allows users to lock their Bitcoin on the Bitcoin testnet while receiving HBTC on Sui, a token backed one-to-one by the underlying BTC.
Cardano, on the other hand, has multiple projects in development, such as Fluid Tokens' ByFrost, which uses Cardano's stake-pool network. However, its liquidity is significantly lower than Sui's, with only $62 million DeFi Total Value Locked (TVL) compared to Sui's $430 million.
The central obstacle for both platforms is custody, as traditional bridges often lock assets under validator or multisig controls, creating large targets for attackers. Hashi claims to have a more secure model, using its own validator network and an independent guardian group to verify Bitcoin transactions.
