Sun Claims Victory as WLF Denies Decision in Frozen Token Dispute
Justin Sun claims to have won a major victory in a hearing regarding his dispute with World Liberty Financial (WLF), but WLF denies this, saying that no decision was made. The case has raised questions about the powers of stablecoin issuers and whether they can freeze user funds.
The dispute began when Sun accused WLF of withholding $45 million in tokens after he rejected an investment offer from WLF. WLF claims that the freezing of funds was done in accordance with its security procedures, following suspicious activities on the blockchain and Sun's signing of a Token Unlock Agreement.
On August 20th, Sun stated that his lawyers had opposed WLF's request to take the case into secret arbitration, but WLF co-founder Zach Witkoff denied Sun's claims, saying that the court did not issue any orders. The judge confirmed that several claims made by Sun's companies should go to arbitration, and the attorneys of Sun agreed to this.
The case has implications for users of WLF's USD1 stablecoin, which is used in at least eight different blockchains, with approximately $4 billion in circulation. A court ruling on the conditions under which a company can freeze accounts could have far-reaching consequences beyond the two parties involved.
