Sweden Cracks Down on Crypto Mining Companies with $51M Tax Demand
The Swedish Tax Agency (STA) has cracked down on cryptocurrency mining companies operating in Boden, imposing approximately $51 million in back taxes and penalties on six firms. The tax authority claims that these companies established misleading operational structures to disguise their active cryptocurrency mining activities, allowing them to claim state tax benefits they were not entitled to.
According to the STA's 2024-2026 industry audit, nine cryptocurrency firms nationwide were hit with over $50 million in unpaid taxes and penalties. The six Boden-based operations accounted for the majority of this amount.
Patrik Lillqvist, head of intelligence at the STA, stated that the companies used complex corporate arrangements to obscure their participation in crypto mining, aiming to obtain tax benefits they were not entitled to. Several firms have appealed the assessments, but lower courts have consistently upheld the tax authority's findings.
