Sweden Hits Crypto Miners with $56M Back Tax Demand in Broad Crackdown
The Swedish Tax Agency has ordered six cryptocurrency mining companies to pay approximately $56.5 million in back taxes and penalties.
The firms, all operating in Boden, were found to have used complex corporate arrangements to hide their participation in crypto mining and access tax relief designed for standard data processing centers.
'You come to a society and steal from it,' said Patrik Lillqvist, head of intelligence at the Swedish Tax Agency.
The investigation, which spanned 2024-2026, uncovered systemic tax evasion across nine cryptocurrency firms nationwide, with six Boden-based operations accounting for the vast majority of unpaid taxes and penalties.
