Swedish Tax Authority Demands $56 Million from Six Crypto Mining Companies

The Swedish tax authority has ordered six crypto mining companies in Boden to pay nearly $56 million in additional taxes, bringing the total amount owed by nine companies to over half a billion Swedish kronor.

Skatteverket claims that these firms disguised their mining operations to claim tax breaks they didn't qualify for. Patrik Lillqvist, head of intelligence at Skatteverket, said that 'the companies that we have inspected often have a special arrangement to conceal that they are engaged in mining.'

The tax dispute centers around the classification of these companies' activities, with Skatteverket treating them as mining operations regardless of how they described their services. This has led to a series of tax assessments and court battles.

HIVE Digital Technologies, one of the affected companies, is converting its Boden mining site into a liquid-cooled AI data center, which could have significant implications for the tax dispute.
