SWIFT Completes First Live Cross-Border Tokenized Deposit Transaction

SWIFT has successfully transitioned its blockchain pilot from test to live settlement. HSBC and Standard Chartered have completed the first cross-border payments using SWIFT's infrastructure for settling tokenized deposits in real-time.

Tokenization allows banks to represent their money on a blockchain, backed 1:1 by their reserves. This means that tokenized deposits can provide financial institutions with 24/7 programmable settlement while remaining within regulated banking structures.

The pilot initiative will act as a bridge connecting the conventional finance industry with distributed ledger technology. It has opened new doors for both the industry and regulators, providing an alternative to stablecoins and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs).
