Switchboard Halt Raises Concerns Over Oracle Network Security
Oracle network provider Switchboard has temporarily halted its Move-based deployments on Aptos, Sui, IOTA, and Movement after identifying a potential compromise. The move was made after an incident involving an allegedly compromised oracle key on IOTA that pushed an asset price feed to $10 million, resulting in approximately 4.94 million VUSD being minted.
The manipulated valuation was used against Virtue, an IOTA-based collateralized debt position protocol, triggering liquidations affecting 45 users. Switchboard's Move-based oracle operations have been halted as a precautionary measure, and users on these networks are advised to temporarily migrate to alternative oracle solutions.
Investigators are examining the incident to determine whether additional applications were exposed. The incident highlights the risk of oracle failures spreading quickly through DeFi systems, emphasizing the need for multiple providers, deviation limits, circuit breakers, and emergency pauses to limit exposure when feeds behave unexpectedly.
