Switzerland Leads Europe in Crypto Adoption as Regulators Struggle to Keep Pace
A recent survey by Bearingpoint found that Switzerland has become a leader in cryptocurrency adoption, with 23% of Swiss adults using digital assets at least occasionally. This is more than double the rate in Germany, where only 11% of respondents reported using cryptocurrency.
The study also showed that Austria landed in the middle, with 18% of respondents reporting occasional use of cryptocurrencies. The findings suggest that Switzerland's lead is not just due to interest in digital assets but how each market has evolved over time.
Switzerland's Distributed Ledger Technology Act, which became effective on August 1, 2021, provided regulatory certainty and helped fuel the growth of Crypto Valley. The ecosystem counted 1,749 active blockchain and DLT companies in its 2024 industry report, representing a 132% increase since 2020.
The survey also found that cryptocurrency adoption remains strongest among younger adults and varies by gender, education, and income. In Switzerland, 36% of respondents between 18 and 24 reported using cryptocurrency.
