Switzerland Turns Regulation into a Competitive Asset

Switzerland's financial regulatory environment has become a competitive advantage for finance and cryptocurrency businesses. The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority, or FINMA, oversees a sector that generated CHF 74 billion in 2024, accounting for about 9% of the country's GDP.

The regulator combines consumer protection with financial stability functions, giving it independence from ordinary government appropriations. Its mandate is to protect creditors, investors, and policyholders while ensuring proper market operation.

FINMA has created a layered regulatory structure that allows companies to operate at various levels of supervision. This model makes regulation more accessible to new businesses, which can remain outside financial regulation or use the lighter fintech license. More complex activities require full prudential licensing.

The self-regulatory organization system provides another critical layer for specialized intermediaries. FINMA recognizes 11 such organizations, including ARIF and PolyReg, which supervise anti-money-laundering compliance while preserving customer identification requirements.
