Symbiosis Recovers 15 BTC After Vulnerability Exploit
Symbiosis, a protocol that enables native Bitcoin (BTC) routing, experienced an exploit on September 11, 2026. The incident occurred when an attacker took advantage of a vulnerability in its BTC Bridge, causing unbacked syBTC tokens to be minted and converted into approximately $336,000.
The attack resulted in the creation of roughly 46.1 billion unbacked syBTC, which is a significant amount, but not necessarily reflective of the attacker's realized gain. Symbiosis has recovered around 15 BTC from the exploit and moved it to a team-controlled multisignature wallet.
Despite the recovery, the protocol's native Bitcoin Bridge remains paused due to ongoing loss calculations and compensation framework determinations for liquidity providers. Chainflip and THORChain partner routes have resumed handling Bitcoin swaps, providing an alternative path for users seeking BTC swaps through Symbiosis.
