Symbiosis Survives $46B Notional Loss with Contained Damage
A recent exploit on Symbiosis's native Bitcoin Bridge left the protocol facing a potential $46.1 billion notional loss, but actual damages were much lower at around $336,000.
The attack, which occurred on September 11, 2026, targeted a vulnerability in Symbiosis's BridgeV2 contract and allowed the attacker to mint a large quantity of unbacked syBTC tokens. However, instead of converting them into other assets, the attacker chose to exchange roughly 4.39 WBTC for Ethereum's Uniswap V4, resulting in a realized loss of about $336,000.
Symbiosis was able to recover approximately 15 BTC from the exploit and secured those funds in a multisig wallet to prevent further unauthorized transactions. The protocol also offered a 20% bounty on recovered or returned funds, with a deadline of September 13, 2026.
