Taiwanese Government Networks Breached by China-Linked Hackers Using Open-Source AI
Reports have emerged of a wave of open-source AI attacks originating from China-linked hackers targeting Taiwan's government networks. The attacks occurred in early July, spanning four days and breaching at least 85 accounts. According to an Israeli AI firm Dream, the hackers used freely available AI agents to steal more than 2,500 personnel records.
The Financial Times reported on the incident, highlighting growing concerns over AI-enabled security risks for the crypto infrastructure. This includes vulnerabilities in CEX custody and DeFi protocols, as well as token launches and fundraising events. The attacks underscore a need for stronger security measures, incident response capabilities, and regulatory scrutiny to protect adoption and assets.
The Taiwanese government networks were compromised using AI agents that are freely available. Dream, the Israeli firm involved in analyzing the breach, stated that this highlights growing risks associated with open-source AI tools being used maliciously. As a result, there is an increased focus on bolstering security measures to prevent similar attacks in the future.
