Tech Giants Clamp Down on AI Token Abuse, Threatening Compute Token Market
Atlassian has implemented usage-based limits on its Rovo AI features to curb skyrocketing costs. The company's monthly AI expenditure ballooned from $5 million in August 2025 to over $15 million by May 2026, a 3x increase in under a year.
This trend is not unique to Atlassian. Tech giants like Amazon and Adobe have also reined in their AI usage after discovering that employees were gaming the system by maximizing token consumption without actual productivity gains.
Atlassian's new system measures Rovo credits across its Jira and Confluence platforms, with tiered monthly allowances ranging from 25 credits for standard plan users to 700 credits per user per month for higher tiers.
Crypto investors should take note of this development. The tokenmaxxing backlash may impact the total addressable market for AI compute tokens, as major enterprises opt for accountability metrics over expanded AI usage.
