Tech Whiz Accused of Stealing $100K from Elderly Friend at McDonald's

Share

California tech whiz William Bao Khoa Ly allegedly befriended an 89-year-old man at a Thousand Oaks McDonald's and stole nearly $100,000 from his accounts between June 2024 and August 2025. The victim, who was targeted by Ly over more than a year, had met the suspect in June 2024 after Ly offered to help him with electronic devices. After befriending the victim, Ly began visiting him regularly, approximately two to three times a week.

During those visits, Ly allegedly obtained the victim's cell phone PIN and used it to access his bank and cryptocurrency accounts. Prosecutors claim that Ly then made nearly 91 transactions totaling about $100,000 from the victim’s bank account into cryptocurrency accounts controlled by him. The victim’s bank caught the alleged fraud and managed to recover more than $50,000.
