Teenage Crypto Heist Kings Embark on Wild Spending Spree

A group of young men in their late teens and early twenties, led by Malone Lam, orchestrated one of the largest cryptocurrency heists in U.S. history, stealing over $240 million in Bitcoin from a Washington D.C. resident.

The scammers used social engineering tactics to dupe their victim into giving them access to his Google Drive and revealing security codes that allowed them to siphon off 4,100 Bitcoin.

Lam and his associates then laundered the stolen funds through multiple exchange platforms, converting virtual currency into government-issued cash. The group's lavish spending spree was short-lived, however, as investigators quickly linked their IP addresses to various luxury purchases.

A total of 18 defendants have been charged in connection with the heist, and Lam is set to plead guilty as part of a plea agreement. His sentencing guidelines recommend a prison term of at least 14 years upon conviction.
