Telecom Giant Teams with Sphere Labs for AI-Powered Payment Infrastructure
Deutsche Telekom is partnering with Sphere Labs to build payment infrastructure for AI agents. This new network, called SphereNet, aims to streamline transactions by verifying identity, sanctions, and payment rules in real-time.
The shift towards autonomous payments is already underway, with Coinbase's x402 protocol processing over 109 million transactions since May 2025. However, this creates a problem: who controls the AI agent, how much can it spend, and whether the recipient is legally allowed to receive the payment?
SphereNet is designed to handle these complexities by integrating compliance checks directly into transaction execution. This means that payments won't settle until all conditions are met, including identity verification, sanctions screening, and jurisdictional rules.
Deutsche Telekom's experience in operating validator infrastructure for established blockchain networks will be crucial in supporting SphereNet's mainnet launch in 2027. The telecom group has a presence in over 50 countries and connects people, companies, and devices across different financial systems.
