Telegram Wallet's Korean Expansion Sparks Regulatory Concerns
Telegram's built-in cryptocurrency wallet service, Wallet, has expanded its reach to South Korea by adding Korean-language support. This move allows users in the country to buy, swap, and transfer virtual assets through the platform, as well as trade perpetual futures and tokenized stocks.
However, this expansion has raised concerns over whether Telegram's operations comply with South Korea's Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) registration requirements. Under the Act on Reporting and Using Specified Financial Transaction Information, any entity providing virtual asset services to domestic users must register with the country's Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU).
Telegram Wallet is a non-custodial wallet that supports multiple blockchains and cryptocurrencies, offering features like peer-to-peer transfers, fiat on-ramps, and access to decentralized finance protocols. The inclusion of complex financial instruments such as perpetual futures and tokenized stocks has introduced more regulatory uncertainty.
The situation highlights the challenges regulators face in overseeing decentralized platforms that operate across borders. South Korea's proactive approach to regulating the crypto industry may set a precedent for other jurisdictions to follow.
