Tenev Defends Tokenized Stocks Amid AMC Criticism
Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev defended his company's tokenized equity offerings against criticism from AMC Entertainment's Adam Aron, who called the product 'contemptible'.
Tenev argued that publicly traded companies relinquish control over their shares once they enter public markets and can't dictate how external entities create derivative products referencing those shares.
The tokenized stocks, released through Robinhood Assets (Jersey) Limited, function as debt instruments backed by actual shares and offer dividend distributions to holders, but exclude voting privileges. Aron requested that Robinhood halt trading of AMC's tokenized shares immediately.
Graham Rodford from Archax noted a distinction between blockchain-native shares and separate tracking instruments, while Carlos Domingo pointed out pricing reliability concerns in limited liquidity token environments.
