Tennessee Cracks Down on Bitcoin ATMs Amid Surge in Scams

Tennessee has made significant strides in protecting its citizens from cryptocurrency scams by banning Bitcoin ATMs, according to Murfreesboro Police. As a result of the new law, which took effect on July 1, businesses across the city are removing these machines.

A total of 30 businesses that previously housed cryptocurrency ATMs were visited by fraud detectives to ensure compliance with the law. The checks revealed that every business inspected was in compliance, although some machines had not yet been removed. Detectives delivered letters from Police Chief Michael Bowen along with a copy of the new law to each business.

The ban on Bitcoin ATMs has led to a significant drop in cryptocurrency scam reports since its implementation. Scammers stole nearly $4.1 million from Murfreesboro victims over a six-month period, often targeting older adults by posing as law enforcement officers or other trusted figures.
