Terafab Semiconductor Plant Launches with $16.8 Billion Investment
Elon Musk's latest venture, Terafab, is a semiconductor plant in Texas that will be larger than any other chip industry project announced to date. The first phase of the project has been officially launched with an investment of $16.8 billion, up from initial estimates of $20 billion and as high as $55 billion.
The plant is expected to produce AI inference processors for Tesla's Optimus robot and Cybercab robotaxi, as well as high-performance chips for SpaceX's orbital data centers. The manufacturing space will be around 100 million square feet, roughly 9.3 million square meters, which is significantly larger than Samsung's Pyeongtaek campus.
The project has significant implications for the crypto market, particularly for those who invest in mining hardware and hold shares in listed miners. The availability of advanced process nodes is a scarce resource that affects the production of ASIC compute engines used to mine Bitcoin.
Tom's Hardware estimates that Terafab will be able to produce over 1 terawatt of compute per year, which would exceed today's global supply. However, it's worth noting that this figure is a company demand forecast and not an audited market number.
