TeraWulf's Lake Mariner Data Center Fire Raises Safety Concerns Amid AI Pivot

TeraWulf's Lake Mariner data center in upstate New York has been plagued by a series of safety concerns after a fire broke out at the facility in early June. Firefighters from the Barker Fire Department arrived to find no functioning fire alarm, suppression system, or working hydrants.

According to TeraWulf, the heavy black smoke emanating from the unfinished building was produced by chemicals that were stored on site, but the safety data sheets detailing these substances had burned up in the blaze. Fire Chief Steve Matisz described his crew's situation as 'kind of blind,' with no clear understanding of what they were dealing with.

The incident highlights concerns about the safety and preparedness of TeraWulf's operations at Lake Mariner, which has been under construction since 2022. The facility is primarily used for Bitcoin mining but is being repurposed to support artificial intelligence and high-performance computing workloads, with a target capacity of 500-750 MW by 2026.

Tenants at the campus include Core42 and Fluidstack, which are supported by Google credit. The regulatory silence following the incident has raised questions about whether sufficient measures have been taken to address potential safety risks at the site.
