Terra's Catastrophic Collapse: How LUNA Survived the Algorithmic Stablecoin Disaster

In May 2022, the Terra ecosystem imploded after its algorithmic stablecoin lost its dollar peg. The native token's value plummeted toward zero, leaving millions of investors with near-worthless assets.

The original chain was preserved as Terra Luna Classic (LUNC) after a community vote, while a new chain called Terra 2.0 launched without the failed stablecoin model. LUNC still trades today and has an active community that runs a deflationary burn mechanism to remove trillions of tokens from circulation.

The algorithmic stablecoin's collapse was caused by its circular design. UST's value depended on demand for LUNA, and LUNA's value depended on demand for UST. When both started falling at the same time, the mechanism accelerated the collapse instead of stabilizing it.
