Tesla and SpaceX Show Two Sides of Decentralized Asset Ownership
Elon Musk's comments on Bitcoin from 2021 are back in focus as the cryptocurrency trades near $78,200. He described decentralization as a defense against coercion, highlighting that no executive or institution can order the network to be emptied.
Musk made this remark at The B Word conference in July 2021, arguing that the network's greatest defense was having 'no throat to choke.' This phrase describes a system without one operator who governments, creditors, or attackers can pressure into shutting it down.
Tesla and SpaceX provide an unusual corporate test of Musk's claim. Their latest filings show identical access to a decentralized asset, but sharply different treasury decisions. Together, the companies hold 30,221 BTC, bought for about $1.05 billion and worth roughly $2.36 billion at market prices.
Tesla purchased $1.5 billion of Bitcoin during early 2021 and later stopped accepting it due to environmental concerns surrounding mining. The company then converted roughly 75% of its purchases into fiat currency in 2022, adding $936 million to its cash balance.
SpaceX, on the other hand, has retained its disclosed units, with 18,712 BTC at a $661 million acquisition cost and a $1.098 billion fair value as of June. The company's decision shows that network resistance does not prevent voluntary selling when corporate liquidity priorities change.
