Tether Amasses Billions in Gold, Bitcoin Reserves as Part of Diversified Empire
Tether, the issuer of the popular stablecoin USDT, is expanding its financial empire beyond just stablecoins. According to Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino, the company has been accumulating large reserves of Bitcoin and physical gold as part of a strategy to transform itself into a diversified financial powerhouse.
The company has purchased 1-2 tons of gold per week, amassing around 140 tons valued at $23-24 billion. Additionally, Tether holds roughly 83,000 to 100,000 BTC worth over $8 billion. These hard assets make up 20-25% of Tether's portfolio and are funded by profits rather than new stablecoin issuance.
This approach positions Tether as a key player in global finance, with its USDT stablecoin circulating around $186 billion and serving as a digital dollar in emerging markets. The move also enhances Tether's credibility with institutional investors and creates ongoing buying pressure in Bitcoin markets.
