Tether and Circle Dominate Stablecoin Market with Combined $257B Value
The stablecoin market has reached a critical juncture, with Tether and Circle dominating the space. The two issuers now command approximately 85% of the total market capitalization, with only one other token exceeding $6 billion. Lorenzo Valente, Director of Digital Asset Research at ARK Invest, attributes this concentration to network effects, where sheer scale directly translates into competitive strength.
According to DeFiLlama data as of September 2026, Tether's market capitalization stands at around $183.4 billion (¥28.3 trillion), while Circle-issued USDC sits at roughly $74.5 billion (¥11.5 trillion). The combined share of these two stablecoins is significant, with a total circulation value of approximately $257.7 billion (¥39.8 trillion).
The dominance of Tether and Circle in the stablecoin market has raised concerns about concentration risks and potential spillover effects on other financial markets. Regulators are taking steps to address these issues, with discussions underway on disclosure requirements for issuers' reserve assets and strengthened supervisory structures.
