Tether Briefly Overtakes Ethereum in Market Value
Tether's (USDT) market capitalization has briefly surpassed Ethereum's (ETH), marking the first time in nearly eight years that this has happened.
The shift, which saw USDT's market cap climb to around $187.05 billion while Ethereum's slipped to about $186.263 billion, is being attributed to investors pulling capital from risk assets and turning to stablecoins for liquidity.
Analysts are now eyeing a potential 'stablecoin season' in 2026, with some arguing that the shift towards stability and utility is driving capital towards stablecoins as a store of value and settlement asset.
Ethereum's market cap has since recovered to near $188 billion, but the brief reversal has drawn attention across the market, where traders have favored defensive positions during weeks of volatility.
