Tether Builds Safe Haven Reserve with BTC, Gold, and Agricultural Land
Tether's CEO, Paolo Ardoino, has outlined his company's strategy for protecting against 'darker times' by accumulating assets that historically serve as safe havens. According to Ardoino, this triptych includes Bitcoin, gold, and agricultural land.
Tether has indeed built a significant reserve of these assets, holding nearly 99,000 BTC and approximately 148 tons of physical gold certified in Switzerland. The company's investment in gold is valued at $23 billion, with an audit conducted by KPMG confirming that Tether's total reserves exceed its commitments by $6.8 billion.
The third pillar of Tether's strategy is agricultural land, which the company acquired through a majority stake in Adecoagro, a Nasdaq-listed agricultural giant. With over 580,000 hectares under management, Tether sees land as a rare resource offering long-term returns and historically serving as a safe haven during times of geopolitical instability.
Ardoino's emphasis on accumulating these assets is not just about diversification but also about hedging against potential risks, particularly the 'main risk looming over Bitcoin' in 2026: a bubble in artificial intelligence investments. By building a reserve of BTC, gold, and arable land, Tether aims to be prepared for any eventuality.
