Tether CEO Fires Back at BIS Over Tokenized Deposit Push
Tether's USDT has become a dominant player in emerging markets, with a market capitalization of over $183 billion. Paolo Ardoino, Tether's CEO, is pushing back against the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) and its promotion of tokenized bank deposits as a more secure alternative to stablecoins.
Ardoino argues that BIS' concerns about stablecoins are misguided, citing their high level of collateralization by U.S. Treasuries, which he believes makes them a safer choice for users.
He also points out that tokenized bank deposits are typically only 10% collateralized by liquid assets, making them less secure than stablecoins.
Ardoino's comments come as the debate over the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, known as the CLARITY ACT, heats up in U.S. politics. The bill has sparked concerns among banks that deposit flight could occur if crypto exchanges are allowed to issue rewards for stablecoin products.
