Tether Defies EU Delistings Amid Regulatory Challenges
The largest stablecoin by market capitalization, Tether (USDT), has shown resilience in the face of regulatory challenges. Despite being delisted from several European crypto exchanges due to non-compliance with the Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) regulation, USDT's exchange reserves remain strong.
According to data from CoinMarketCap, USDT's market capitalization dropped slightly from $140.5 billion to $138 billion within a week, reflecting growing market apprehension about Tether's regulatory challenges in the EU. However, CryptoQuant's CEO, Ki Young Ju, argues that Tether's fundamental position remains unaffected.
The MiCA regulation, effective from December 30, requires stablecoin issuers to secure specific licenses to operate within the EU, a requirement Tether has yet to fulfill. This has led to several exchanges ceasing USDT trading in the EU, impacting its presence in the region.
