Tether Dominates Crypto Market Volume, But What Does It Really Mean?
The crypto market's most active asset is not Bitcoin as you might expect. According to recent data, Tether (USDT) trades more than Bitcoin every single day, with a recent reading showing roughly $31.4 billion of USDT changing hands against $20.3 billion of Bitcoin.
This phenomenon can be attributed to the fact that stablecoins are not assets people buy, but rather the currency they use to buy other assets with. Since most crypto trading pairs are quoted against USDT rather than dollars, its volume measures activity across the whole market, not just demand for Tether itself.
The same dollar gets counted many times in exchange-reported volume figures due to mechanisms like bot traffic, internal exchange transfers, and wash trading. Adjusted volume metrics attempt to correct for these distortions by stripping out non-economic activity. According to Visa's onchain analytics dashboard, adjusted stablecoin transaction volume totaled roughly $8.82 trillion through the first half of 2026.
