Tether Expands USAT Stablecoin to Celo Network

Tether's USAT stablecoin has launched on the Celo network, marking its first deployment beyond Ethereum. The move is seen as a strategic expansion for USAT, which can now tap into Celo's large user base and take advantage of its fee system.

Celo's existing stablecoin activity makes it an attractive choice for USAT, with over 28% of USDT transfers happening on the network. Additionally, Celo has seen significant growth in the second quarter of this year, with 67% user growth reported.

The integration of USAT with Celo also enables users to pay blockchain gas fees using the stablecoin itself, eliminating the need for a separate token. This is made possible by Celo's fee abstraction system, which allows ERC-20 tokens like USAT to act as gas currencies.

Tether CEO Bo Hines has stated that expanding USAT to Celo was a deliberate decision, citing the network's large base of users already using digital dollars. The move is expected to bring USAT closer to its target market and increase adoption in everyday transactions.
