Tether Expands USDT Supply by $1 Billion Amid Institutional Demand
Tether has minted an additional billion USDT, bringing its total supply to near 189 billion tokens. This is the latest instance of Tether's strategy to bolster supply in anticipation of increased demand. The new tokens are labeled as 'authorized but unissued,' meaning they are not yet in active circulation.
The recent mint contributes to a reserve of around 6 billion tokens that have been minted but not distributed to users. Throughout 2025 and into 2026, Tether has engaged in multiple large-scale USDT issuances, generally in increments of $1 billion. This regular activity typically signals ongoing institutional demand for stablecoin liquidity tied to the U.S. dollar.
Tether's Q2 2026 attestation highlights a robust operational environment, with nearly $184.6 billion in issued USDT and an impressive net operating profit of $1.5 billion. The company also possesses over $4 billion in excess reserves, indicating that its assets exceed the issuance of USDT currently in circulation.
