Tether Freeze Protocol Exposed as Illicit Activity Continues

A recent incident involving Tether's freeze protocol has raised concerns about its effectiveness in preventing illicit activity. According to BlockSec, a Tron address beat Tether's freeze by six minutes, emptying $3.1 million USDT into an unknown wallet while the freeze was still pending.

BitOK, an on-chain analytics firm, analyzed 8,310 freeze proposals since 2017 and found that $215.5 million moved out during delay windows, with a median reaction time of 77 minutes. The firm's CEO, Dmitry Machikhin, stated that Tether has become faster in its freezes but the system remains vulnerable to interceptors.

The issue is not just about the speed of freezes, but also about the public nature of the freeze window. BitOK's research found that even with accelerated freezes, $127.6 million left targeted addresses during the public window across 107 cases in the last year.

Tether has argued that the delay is a necessary trade-off for responsible responsiveness to its massive ecosystem. However, Machikhin disputes this, stating that Tether should improve its algorithms and pay more attention to illicit activity.
