Tether Freezes Record $544M in Turkish Betting Probe
Tether's cooperation with Turkish law enforcement has led to one of its largest single enforcement actions, freezing $544 million in USDT at the request of Istanbul prosecutors. This action is part of a broader crackdown on underground gambling platforms and money laundering operations across Turkey.
The seizure represents a significant move by Tether to comply with local laws, as CEO Paolo Ardoino stated that the company acted 'in respect of the laws of the country' after receiving information from law enforcement. This incident highlights Tether's dual role as both a dominant stablecoin facilitating $4.4 trillion in quarterly transactions and a centralized chokepoint enabling law enforcement to freeze assets suspected of criminal ties.
Tether has disclosed that it has assisted in more than 1,800 investigations across 62 countries, resulting in $3.4 billion in frozen USDT connected to alleged criminal activity. The company works closely with U.S. agencies, including the FBI and Secret Service, as well as international law enforcement on cases ranging from fraud to sanctions evasion.
Notably, despite ongoing scrutiny of USDT's role in illicit finance, Tether continued expanding during crypto's recent downturn, reaching a market capitalization of $187.3 billion in Q4 2025.
