Tether Gold Sees Increased Demand Amid Falling Gold Prices
Gold prices declined by 14.1% in Q2 to close at $4,008 per ounce, yet investor demand for tokenized gold increased instead of retreating. According to Tether Gold [XAUT], customer holdings rose by 9.5%, adding over 53,000 XAUT during the quarter. This translated into an additional 1.66 tonnes of physical gold ownership.
Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino noted that holders of Tether Gold are not only buying XAUT when the price of gold is rising but also using periods of market weakness to increase their ownership of physical gold. With Tether maintaining 707,747 fine troy ounces of reserves, it appears that investors view gold-backed tokens as a means of obtaining long-term stability of assets with respect to gold.
XAUT's Q2 results show an emerging trend in crypto markets toward the tokenization of real-world assets. As tokenized gold combines physical ownership with continuous blockchain settlement, making it easier to trade, transfer, and integrate into decentralized finance, its flexibility becomes increasingly valuable when investors seek stability without leaving the digital asset ecosystem.
