Tether Overtakes Ethereum in Market Value Before Losing Ground
Tether's USDT briefly overtook Ethereum in market value for the first time in nearly eight years, but its reign at second place was short-lived. According to recent data, Tether's market cap climbed to approximately $187.05 billion, surpassing Ethereum's $186.263 billion and resulting in a less-than-$1 billion gap between the two assets.
The flip was brief, however, as Ethereum quickly regained its spot at second place, with its market cap now near $188 billion. This development comes amidst a broader trend of investors pulling capital from risk assets and seeking liquidity through stablecoins.
Analysts have noted that the shift towards stablecoins is fueling speculation about a potential 'stablecoin season' in 2026. Mike McGlone, senior strategist at Bloomberg Intelligence, has argued that capital is gravitating towards stability and utility, making stablecoins attractive as a store of value and settlement asset when conviction fades.
