Tether Passes High-Stakes Audit, Proving Detractors Wrong
Tether, the issuer of the USDT stablecoin, has long been scrutinized for questions about the reserves backing its digital dollar. However, a recent audit by KPMG US has issued a positive opinion on the firm following a complete examination. The audit looked at Tether's entire financial statements, including assets, liabilities, income, equity, and cash flows, as well as transactions, systems, valuations, and supporting evidence. KPMG physically counted and inspected every individual gold bar held by Tether, confirming that reserves exceeded liabilities by $6.814 billion at year-end.
Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, said the audit was a defining moment for the stablecoin industry, proving detractors wrong once again. 'They said the company refused to subject itself to rigorous scrutiny. We have once again proven them wrong,' he stated.
The current market cap of USDT is around $183 billion, with Circle's USDC being its nearest competitor at $72 billion. Stablecoin usage is growing quickly as more of traditional finance embraces the technology and other institutions seek to issue their own digital money.
