Tether Sprints Past Ethereum in Brief Crypto Power Play
Tether's value surged to second place behind Bitcoin on Friday, temporarily dethroning Ethereum as the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization. This sudden shift occurred after a sharp selloff dragged Ether's price down to $1,510, its weakest level this year, representing a 5.2% drop over 24 hours.
The brief lead was short-lived, however, as dip buyers returned and Ethereum reclaimed second place near $189 billion within hours. Despite the reversal, analysts see the rotation as a textbook flight to safety, with Tether's growing supply driven by demand for stablecoins during times of market downturns.
As Tether's value rises, its appeal increases when fear spreads, and its supply has swelled toward record highs through the current downturn. Experts like Andri Fauzan Adziima from Bitrue Research Institute note that the market still favors stability over Ether's volatility, while Alvin Kan, chief operating officer at Bitget Wallet, sees deeper stablecoin liquidity supporting higher trading volumes and broader innovation across the market.
