Tether Surpasses Ethereum in Market Value
Tether's USDT briefly surpassed Ethereum in market value for the first time in nearly eight years, but its lead was short-lived. The market cap of USDT climbed to around $187.05 billion while Ethereum's slipped to about $186.263 billion, allowing USDT to claim second place.
The shift is seen as a sign that investors are pulling capital from risk assets and seeking stability in the form of stablecoins like USDT. Analysts have been predicting a 'stablecoin season' for 2026, with Mike McGlone, a senior strategist at Bloomberg Intelligence, stating that capital is gravitating towards stability and utility.
Peter Schiff, a well-known Bitcoin critic, has also predicted that Tether's market cap will eventually surpass Ethereum's and even Bitcoin's (BTC). The market has seen a broad retreat from risk assets in recent weeks, with investors pulling over $400 billion from the crypto space and stablecoin market contraction exceeding $7 billion.
