Tether Surpasses Ethereum in Market Value, Then Falls Back
Tether's (USDT) market value briefly surpassed Ethereum's (ETH) for the first time in nearly eight years, according to recent data. The stablecoin's market cap climbed to around $187.05 billion, while Ethereum's slipped to approximately $186.263 billion.
The gap between the two assets fell below $1 billion before Ethereum recovered its second-place ranking. This shift has sparked discussion among analysts about a potential 'stablecoin season' in 2026.
Investors have been pulling capital from risk assets and turning to stablecoins for liquidity, contributing to the market's current volatility. Mike McGlone, a senior strategist at Bloomberg Intelligence, notes that capital is gravitating toward stability and utility, making stablecoins attractive as a store of value and settlement asset.
