Tether Surpasses Ethereum in Market Value, Then Slips Back

Tether's USDT briefly overtook Ethereum in market value for the first time in nearly eight years, only to slip back into second place. According to data, USDT's market cap climbed to roughly $187.05 billion while Ethereum's slipped to about $186.263 billion, with a gap of less than $1 billion between the two assets.

The reversal drew attention from traders, who have favored defensive positions during weeks of volatility. Analysts point to a shift in investor capital towards stablecoins for liquidity, citing a broad retreat from risk assets. The stablecoin market has contracted by more than $7 billion in under 21 days, while investors have pulled about $400 billion from crypto.

Mike McGlone, a senior strategist at Bloomberg Intelligence, says that capital is gravitating towards stability and utility, making stablecoins attractive as a store of value and settlement asset when conviction fades. This trend has led some analysts to predict a 'stablecoin season' in 2026.
