Tether Winds Down Gold-Backed Stablecoin aUSDT
Tether is winding down its gold-backed stablecoin, aUSDT, which was launched in June 2024. The company has announced that it will stop accepting new positions and minting new tokens from September 17, 2026, citing a lack of demand and focus on larger products.
As of September 1, 2026, the outstanding amount of aUSDT has barely moved since the announcement, with 50 million units still in the contract. The market capitalization of aUSDT is estimated to be around $54 million, according to data provider CoinGecko.
Redeeming aUSDT involves returning the dollar units and releasing the deposited Tether Gold (XAUT). To do this, users must establish their balance, access the Alloy platform using the same wallet, close the position by returning the aUSDT, and check the result to ensure that the gold amount matches the original collateral.
Tether has granted a three-month redemption window, which ends on September 17, 2026. Users are advised to redeem their aUSDT before the deadline, as the option will no longer be available after that date.
