Tether's $4.2 Billion Loss Exposes Weakness in Stablecoin Reserves
Tether, one of the largest stablecoin issuers in the market, has reported a net operating profit of $1.5 billion for its second quarter. However, a closer look at the company's reserve report reveals that Tether actually suffered a significant financial hit, with an implied negative result of $4.211 billion for the same period.
The discrepancy between the reported profit and actual losses is attributed to the way Tether values its assets, particularly gold and Bitcoin. The company's reserve report shows that it valued its gold holdings at $4,668.06 per ounce on March 31, but this value had dropped to $4,008.02 per ounce by June 30. Similarly, the valuation price for Bitcoin fell from $68,193.95 to $58,642.15.
These markdowns alone explain a large share of the implied hit, which amounts to approximately $3.73 billion. However, Tether's financial result is still negative $4.211 billion after accounting for other factors such as secured loans and public equities.
